The only way these computers can communicate to the driver that there is a problem with a component is by displaying a warning message or light on your dashboard, often these are very vague, and so do little to help you understand what’s wrong with your car.

The way to find out what’s gone wrong with a modern car is by connecting a scanner to what’s called an OBDII port, which is basically a socket that allows diagnostic equipment to be connected to the vehicle, all modern vehicles have an OBDII port for this reason.

Anyone can go & buy a suitable scanner for their car or van to ‘read’ these Trouble Codes, or DTC’s, but they’re expensive & probably not something you’d need to use again.
